This week we started new units in all three grades. All three grades are participating in Floor Hockey and Nutrition Units. The class period is split between time in the gym and health classroom.
In floor hockey, students are learning basic puck handling skills, passing, and shooting. Games will start next week. Nutrition has started as well. Students will leave this unit very knowledgable about the 5 food groups, including MyPlate. They will also focus on calories, how much they really should be eating, the importance of a healthy diet, as well as risks of an unhealthy diet. There will be test at the end of the unit, in 3 weeks, on March 20th. A study guide will be posted ASAP and students have been taking notes in class. I have also uploaded the powerpoints from the first 2 lessons under the "Health" tab and then grade level. Our next day of PE is this Thursday. All classes will begin a new unit of Speedball. Speedball is a combination of Football, Soccer, and Basketball. Points can be scored by throwing the ball to a teammate across the endzone, making a basket, or kicking the ball into the goal. Below is a video showing how the game is played :) 8th grade will take their Family Life test this Wednesday. Study guides were handed out last Thursday. I do have some extra copies but have posted the study guide below as well.
7th grade: Team Handball will start next week for my 7th grade class, due to the 7th grade field trip today. We finished up Family Life last week.
8th grade: Team Handball has started for this group. We went over game rules and went straight into game play. We are splitting the block by also going to the health classroom for Family Life. 6th grade: Team Handball will start today for this group. Students will watch a video of what the game looks like and will learn the rules/skills to play. Students will be put into teams to begin games today as well. 8 days til break!!!! =) 7th Grade: TNT (Towards No Tobacco) unit with Mr. Cople will end this Thursday! Reminder to turn in all the homework you are missing. I will accept it as a late grade!!
8th grade: Pickleball unit is well underway! This game incorporates the games of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. We will finish this unit this week. 6th grade: Firearm/Hunter safety will conclude this Thursday with the final test. All students enrolled in this course will take the test to become certified and the score will count for their grade for this unit. Family life permission forms are due TOMORROW for full credit for 6th and 7th grade. This is a 10 point homework assignment. Each day it is late, will be one point off. In order to earn all 10 points, students need to turn it in tomorrow. We need these back whether or not he/she will be taking the course.
7th grade: This week my seventh grade class starts their Tobacco Unit, titled TNT (Towards No Tobacco). This unit is taught by Ron Cople, a health professional from RMH. He has been teaching this unit to our 7th graders for a past few years and does a marvelous job!! There will be a couple homework assignments in this unit which do count for a grade. In the past some students' grades for the 9 weeks went way down because they did not turn in these simple homework assignments. This unit will last for 2 weeks. They will not be dressing out and will earn a daily grade by coming prepared to class with a pencil and notebook.
8th grade: Pickleball!!! This game is a combination of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. We will be playing this game for the next two weeks! 6th grade: Firearm/Hunter Safety starts tomorrow and will last for two weeks. Mr. Long teaches this very informative unit. Students will learn the basics of hunting safety as well as how to handle firearms in a safe manner. They will receive a booklet which has all the information they need to know. At the end of the unit, students will take a test to be certified and those who pass will receive a Virginia Hunter Education certificate, card, and patch. The test will also count towards their PE grade. Their daily PE grade will come from bringing a pencil and notebook to class everyday. We will not be dressing out. Those who opted out of this course will have alternative work to receive a grade. |
