4th Block/6th Grade: 2 Week Personal Goal packers are due next Thursday, February 19th!! ALL CLASSES: Folders are due the end of class Thursday and will be graded this weekend. This is a friendly reminder that field trip permission forms are due back, with $10 payment, by next Tuesday, February 17th. I have enough chaperones to cover the number of kids I have signed up so far and have alternates in case numbers go way up. I will not accept late forms and payment. FEBRUARY 17TH IS FINAL!!
We have planned our Spring field trip! This trip we will be focusing on Families and Careers. We will be visiting family owned businesses, learning what it takes to run a business and how family ties are at the foundation of each one. Fitness and health are also integral parts of this trip with discovering how dairy products end up on grocery store shelves and the importance of daily physical activity.
This trip is available to all FCCLA members and to current Family and Consumer Science students on a first come, first serve basis. In order to be placed on the participation list, each student must turn in the permission form and EXACT payment (Cash or check). At that point, a bus seat will be reserved for him or her. (If students have earned enough credits for the trip, the credits will count as payment, and no cash is due.) Students: MUST wear athletic clothes/footwear as we will be participating in a group fitness class and will be going on a farm. NO FLIP-FLOPS! On March 5th, we plan to leave school at 9:30 and we’ve scheduled stops at: Harrisonburg 24/7 Family Fitness – We will tour the locally owned and family friendly business learn about the resources and classes they offer to benefit health and wellness goals. We will also participate in a Zumba dance class taught by one of their instructors! Should be a lot of fun and we will be sure to work up an appetite for lunch! Lunch at Wood Grill Buffet! We will stop for lunch at the Wood Grill Buffet. $10.00 for lunch and a beverage. Mount Crawford Creamery – Located in Mount Crawford, our last stop will include a tour of the dairy barn, processing plant, baby calves, and samples of milk and butter. Students will get to learn the history of the creamery and how the family got the farm started. If students want to purchase anything from their shop this is their chance (milk, pies, t-shirts, peanuts, etc). Students must wear closed toe shoes to tour the creamery, as we will be outside and in a barn with baby calves. We will arrive back at MMS in time for Lab (around 2:20 PM). The cost of the entire field trip will be $10. Make Checks Payable to MMS. FCCLA credits may be used. Because we need to provide a final count for our reservations, the cut-off date for returning this permission form and payment will be February 17th. This date is final. The first semester has come to an end and I want to say thank you to all of my students for making it a great one!!!! You all were so wonderful to work with and I hope to see those 6th and 7th graders back next year!! 8th graders, I hope you all sign up for more FACS classes at SHS!!
7th grade: We have been discussing/learning about what it means to be a good consumer. This includes how to make a budget, how companies convince us to buy their products, what rights/responsibilities we have as consumers, and much more! Students will be working on a packet in class tomorrow and Monday which will count as a quiz grade. Textbooks and notes can be used to complete the packet.
8th grade: We have been discussing careers. On Monday, students got to take the Meyers-Briggs personality test on MacBooks. This test determines a person's personality type based on the answers student's put in. The results showed the traits which go along their personality, as well as which type of work setting they would excel in, friendship/relationship tendencies, as well as strengths and weakness. Students then used the MacBooks to research a career of interest. Students are now woking on a poster for their career. They will present their posters to the class on Tuesday of next week. 6th grade: Welcome to sewing school! Students have begun handsewing, learning the runnning stitch and the edge stitch. Students practiced on paper, sewed felt snowfakes, and learned to sew on buttons. Students will begin their cupcake pincushion project tomorrow in class! 8th grade (2nd Block) has had a very exciting week competing in the first annual Cupcake Wars. Monday the class watched an episode of Cupcake Wars. They observed baking techniques professional bakers use in the kitchen as well as teamwork, decorating, flavor combinations, and time management. After watching the episode, students were given four different cupcake recipes and frosting recipes to choose as a base for their cupcakes. They were told the theme (Thanksgiving) as well as the secret ingredient (candy corn). The secret ingredient had to be in either the cupcake or the frosting, their choice. The four teams planned specific jobs for group members to make sure everyone had something to contribute to the competition. Wednesday was day one of competition, which consisted of baking the cupcakes and preparing the frosting. The cupcake recipes were based off of boxed cake mixes, with other extra ingredients added in, such as pumpkin, sour cream, and cinnamon. The frosting was made completely from scratch! Today, Friday, was the final day of the competition. Students were given 30 min in the kitchen to decorate their cupcakes and plate them for the judges. Mr. Miller, Mrs. Woodrum, Mr. Bryant, and Mr. Gheen were our esteem judges. The judges got to walk around the kitchen to observe the teams decorating their cupcakes. Judges were watching for teamwork skills, as this was a part of the judging process. Once the 30 minutes was complete, the teams presented their cupcakes to the judges. The judges used a rubric consisting of these four things to judge the cupcakes: teamwork observed in the decorating process, taste of cake, taste of icing, use of special ingredient (candy corn), and presentation of cupcake. It was a very tough decision!! All four teams presented some very visually appealing and tasty cupcakes, but the Cupcake Queens came out on top of the competition with their Vanilla Cupcakes and Cinnamon Buttercream frosting!! Congratulations to Alexis Minnick, Amanda Aponte, Laurel Simmons, and Chloe Crawford!! Although there could only be one Cupcake War winner, all teams competed with grace and maturity today. The cupcakes they presented were all yummy enough to be seen in a bakery's display case. Good job today ladies!!! 7th Grade: Students will be taking an Open Folder Test on Tuesday which will cover all topics we've covered in this food unit. This includes: food safety, kitchen safety, calories, reading a recipe, cooking terms, food labels, and breakfast. Students will be able to look at their folders as they take their test. After we take the test we will plan for our last Food Lab, making pancakes, which will be on Thursday November 13th!
8th Grade: Students will observe a food lab demonstration on Tuesday for Pizza Bites. Students will be shown how to prepare this food, lab procedures, and clean up. After the demonstration, students will plan for their own food lab of making pizza bites on Thursday November 13th. 6th Grade: Our new 9 weeks is off to a great start! We talked about goal setting this week. This includes how to set a "SMART" goal, long term/short term goals, as well as the difference between wants/needs. Students were asked to set their own personal short term goal they can try to accomplish in 2 weeks. The assignment packet is due November 19th and counts as their first test grade. |
